The Rwanda Civil Society Development Barometer 2012
The Rwanda Civil Society Development Barometer (CSDB) is the first study aimed at establishing indicators to measure various aspects of civil society organizations (CSOs) in Rwanda.
The objectives of this study are to assess the role of civil society in the socio-economic development in Rwanda and serve as a source of measurement indicators of civil society as defined in Rwanda Governance Scorecard (RGS) developed by Rwanda Governance Board (RGB).
It is pertinent to note that various studies, especially the RGS, have confirmed that while CSOs are playing a significant role in Rwanda’s socio-economic development, they need to be more proactive in reaching a greater number of citizens.
The CSDB is timely given that CSOs, like many other organisations, are currently restructuring in order to become more productive in the socio-economic transformation of the country.
Furthermore, the Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) is mandated, among others, to facilitate and coordinate governance related to activities in civil society in Rwanda. The favorable policies pursued by the Government have increasingly been linked with making CSOs conform better to the principles of good governance.
This barometer will serve, not only as a tool for assessing the role and impact of CSOs in Rwanda’s development, but also, as a strong model of cooperation among institutions with the common goal of improving the welfare of the citizens.
