RGB and its development partners celebrate the African Day of Information

On this Thursday 7th November 2024, RGB and its development partners celebrated the African Day of Information (ADI).

The event which was held at Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village brought together different people including Government officials, Civil Society Organizations representatives, development partners, delegates from regional and continental umbrella organizations of the media, media practitioners, and academia to discuss the development of Media sector in Rwanda.

This event coincided with Development Journalism awards (DJA) whereby the best performing journalists were awarded within different categories.

The Development Journalism Awards (DJA) is a flagship event organized by the Rwanda Journalists Association (ARJ) in collaboration with the Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) and Rwanda Media Commission (RMC) to strengthen media development in Rwanda, by providing incentives and motivation to practicing journalists in order to promote professionalism in the media sector.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Doris Uwicyeza Picard, the Chief Executive Officer of RGB appreciated the participants who came to join hands with RGB and its other partners to celebrate African Day of Information.

The general objective of celebrating the Africa Day of Information is to revitalize the role of African media in the continent’s transformation and development in light of the agenda 2063” she said.

To sustain its commendable efforts to cover the continent and promote its unlimited potentialities, the African Media has to continuously adjust to the rapidly changing environment, among which, is the digital component” she added.  

Mr. Ozonnia Ojielo, the UN Resident Coordinator saluted the work done by RGB and its development partners for their role in media development in Rwanda.

Mr.  Ozonnia said “as the One United Nations (One UN) in Rwanda facilitated the growth of journalist skills in investigative journalism and reporting sustainable development, I hope the media will continue to be a platform for good governance and democracy and the source of information for citizens”.

In this 2024 DJA, at least 31journalists from different media houses were awarded within 23 categories and one journalist on the year who was given a certificate and a check of 7 million Rwandan Francs.
