RGB and its development partners celebrate the African Day of Information and award the best performing journalists

On this Friday 7th November 2025, RGB and its development partners celebrated the African Day of Information (ADI).

The event which was held at Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village brought together different people including Government officials, Civil Society Organizations representatives, development partners, delegates from regional and continental umbrella organizations of the media, media practitioners, and academia to discuss the development of Media sector in Rwanda.

This event coincided with Development Journalism awards (DJA) whereby the best performing journalists were awarded within different categories.

The Development Journalism Awards (DJA) is a flagship event organized by the Rwanda Journalists Association (ARJ) in collaboration with the Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) and Rwanda Media Commission (RMC) to strengthen media development in Rwanda, by providing incentives and motivation to practicing journalists in order to promote professionalism in the media sector.

In his opening remarks, the RGB Secretary General Dr. Kalisa Edward said that celebrating African Day of Information is not merely to commemorate a date on the calendar, but to reflect on the power of information, communication, and digital connection in shaping the future of our continent.

“As we celebrate this promise, we must also confront the challenges that remain limited access to accurate information, digital divides, misinformation, and the underrepresentation of African perspectives in global narratives” he said.

Addressing the participant after awarding the journalists, the RGB Deputy CEO Dr. USENGUMUKIZA Felicien congratulated all award recipients for their exceptional contributions to the development of media landscape. He also thanked the achievements of ARFEM members, whose dedication continues to advance gender equality and amplify women’s voices in the media.

“This ceremony has once again reminded us that journalism, when anchored in ethics, accuracy, and purpose, remains a cornerstone of democratic governance and national development” he said.

“The stories, analyses, and investigations we have recognised this evening speak not only to journalistic excellence but also to a deep sense of responsibility towards our nation’s progress and the wellbeing of our citizens” he added.

The 2025 Awards have been held in conjunction with the African Day of Information, celebrated this year under the theme “The African Youth and the Narrative on The Africa We Want: Challenges and Opportunities.”

In this 2024 DJA, at least 31journalists from different media houses were awarded within 23 categories and one journalist on the year who was given a certificate and a check of 7 million Rwandan Francs.
