On Friday 15 May 2026, RGB and its development partners namely Rwanda Civil Society Platform (RCSP), Network of International non-government Organisations (NINGO) and, Rwanda Inter-Religious Council (RIC) joined hands to commemorate the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi. #Kwibuka32

This year, Kwibuka event was held at Mukarange Genocide Memorial located in Kayonda District. The event started with a guided tour inside the memorial and laying wreath on a tomb where more than 9500 bodies of Tutsis who were killed during the 1994 Genocide against Tusti are laid to rest.

In his testimony, Usengimana Richard said that Mukarange was one of the areas in Kayonza District where the Genocide started immediately after it broke out, as on April 7, 1994, the Tutsi living there had already begun to be burned in their homes and killed.

He spoke about the severe suffering he endured together with others, explaining that the killers hit him against a wall, then hacked him with machetes and left him for dead, but he later regained consciousness and survived.

Usengimana continued hiding from the killers until the then Rwandan Patriotic Front army rescued him. Today, he has recovered from his injuries and is rebuilding his life and developing himself socially and economically.

Speaking to participants during the commemoration, Dr. Usengumukiza Felicien thanked the partners of Rwanda Governance Board as well as the residents of Kayonza District who joined hands in commemorating the 32nd anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, particularly in Mukarange.

Dr. Usengumukiza also conveyed his condolences and comfort to the survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, especially those whose relatives are laid to rest in Mukarange Genocide Memorial.

“Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi should not only be an opportunity to come together and discuss our history, but also it is a moment to exchange ideas on how civil society can continue to be a partner of the government in preventing genocide and combating genocide ideology” he said.

Apart from commemoration activities and other soothing messages delivered by local leaders and other officials, RGB and its development partners donated 6 cows to support vulnerable families of the survivors of 1994 Genocide against Tutsi.
