The history of Nyange is an essential lesson for RGB staff- Prof.Shyaka Anastase
Prof. Shyaka has reiterated that the horrific history of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsis in Nyange sector of Ngorerero District and the act of heroism recorded at the same place constitute an important lesson for Rwanda Governance Board Staff.
Prof. Shyaka noted this on Friday 8 June 2018, as RGB staff joined Nyange residents in Ngorerero District to commemorate the 1994 Genocide against Tutsis at Nyange Genocide memorial site.
The story of Nyange is unique in a sense that during the 1994 Genocide, thousands of Tutsis fled to a catholic church in that area believing they would find safe heaven at that holy place. However, few days later, renowned priest Seromba order to demolish the church using a caterpillar and all Tutsis inside the house died.
Nyange is also renowned for the story of heroism of students of Nyange. In March 1997, an insurgency of Interahamwe militia broke into the school, entered in one class and ordered students to separate themselves, to have Tutsis at one side and Hutus at the other side. The students bravely denied to separate themselves and told the militia “we are all Rwandans”. Frustrated, the militia started shelling grenades and shooting at the students. A number of students were killed and other survived. Today the students of Nyange are classified in the category of Imena” heroes.
“on one hand, this bad history of Nyange reflects how the bad leadership and discriminatory governance of before 1994 divided Rwandans and led to the tragedy of the 1994 Genocide Against Tutsis. On the other hand , the heroism of Nyange students remains a typical example of the fruits of good governance, fostering unity and reconciliation promoted by the government of Rwanda after 1994. It is therefore important for RGB staff to be always mindful that governance is the backbone of our country.” Stressed Prof. Shyaka.
RGB also donated eight cows to families of genocide survivors of Nyange to help them improve their socioeconomic life standards.
Ngororero District’s officials appreciated the significant gesture of RGB to join Nyange residents to commemorate the 1994 Genocide against Tutsis and donating cows to vulnerable genocide survivors.
“On the behalf of the District leadership and the people of Ngororero, I express sincere gratitude for giving us both moral and physical support. Your visit today is significant gesture that assures survivors that government and Rwandans are always with them. In addition, the cows you gave constitute a big support to back the efforts of the district in catering for the needs of genocide survivors in district.
