Umurenge Kagame Cup 2025, champions crowned
On Sunday, 15 June in Musanze district, the 2025 Umurenge Kagame Cup came to an end, leaving Jabana sector’s football team in men and Mahembe football in women crowned champions.
The two-day event engaged athletes across eight disciplines including football, volleyball, Basketball, sit ball, high jump to cycling, Athletics and Igisoro.
In two final matches that took place at Ubworoherane studium located in Musanze city where a tense football match between Jabana Sector representing Kigali and Mbazi Sector reprenting the Southern Province resulted with 2-nil in favor of Jabana Sector and clinched the coveted tournament title.
In women’s football, Mahembe Sector from Nyamasheke (Western Province) edged past Kacyiru Sector from Kigali 1-nil.
In other disciplines, olleyball glory went to Niboye Sector (Kicukiro, Kigali), who overpowered Ngoma Sector from the Eastern Province with a 3-1 set victory. Basketball saw Musanze dominate both men’s and women’s finals, defeating Rutsiro 78-71 in the men’s game and overcoming Kamonyi in the women’s bracket.
Kigali athletes left their mark in athletics, winning most of the podium spots:
In high jump, Djibril Masengesho (Nyamasheke) and Solange Uwamariya (Kigali) took gold medals.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Local Government, Hon. Dr. Patrice Mugenzi, who was also the guest honor saluted the preparation and inclusive participation of Umurunege Kagame Cup
“This year, all 416 sectors took part in the Kagame Cup. It’s a great show of support for His Excellency President Paul Kagame’s vision of inclusive governance and citizen-centered development” he said.
The RGB Deputy CEO Dr. Usengumukiza Felicien praised Rwanda's unique approach to governance, emphasizing the importance of open dialogue between leaders and citizens.
"It is our responsibility to ensure that our citizens are healthy and happy, and this tournament attains both objectives," he said.
Umurenge Kagame Cup competitions are sports competitions that bring together all Sectors countrywide, in which the best Sectors represent their districts, and then their Provinces or the City of Kigali, before the winners meet at the national level for final competitions and is jointly organised by the Ministry of Sports, Ministry of Local Government and Rwanda Governance Board (RGB).
