Umurenge Kagame Cup to be boosted by next year- Minister Musabyimana
On Sunday 25 June 2023 during the final games of Umurenge Kagame Cup held in Huye and Gisagara District, Minister of Local Government Hon. Busabyimana Jean Claude announced that by next year Umurenge Kagame Cup competitions will be boosted by increasing the number of competitors and the budget allocated to this tournament.
Minister requested all districts officials to put Umurenge Kagame Cup into consideration while budgeting, so that the next competitions will be more inclusive and popular from all grassroots level.
“We have seen different excellent talents that we have to protect. Mayors and other district staff will help us to promote these talents so that the players can eventually play on national and international level” He said
The RGB CEO Dr. Usta Kaitesi reminded that through Umurenge Kagame Cup, Rwandans recognize the role of H.E President Paul Kagame, for his relentless commitment to promoting Good Governance in Rwanda and his tremendous support to the promotion of sports among the youth within the country and beyond.
2017, Umurenge Kagame Cup Competitions were upgraded from only playing football to include more new disciplines, namely Sit-Ball and Athletics to be inclusive. In 2019 other discipline like Cycling, Volley ball and Basketball were added to increase chances for more participation in sports.
This fiscal year 2022-2023 Rwanda traditional games were introduced to allow all categories to be represented in the competitions including High Jump “Gusimbuka urukiramende” and “Kubuguza”
Umurenge Kagame Cup competitions are sports competitions that bring together all Sectors countrywide, in which the best Sectors represent their districts, and then their Provinces or the City of Kigali, before the winners meet at the national level for final competitions.
In 2012, RGB joined the Ministries of Local Government together with the then Ministry of Sports and Culture in the preparation and organisation of Umurenge Kagame Cup to promote good governance using sports especially in youth mobilisation.
